Get Screened

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Texas women.

Screening mammograms can check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. When found early, breast cancer is easier to treat. Finding cancer early means you will live longer.

Addressing Cancer Together, a program of United Way Greater Austin, is helping people who are uninsured get screened, diagnosed, and treated for breast cancer.

Our goal is to increase screening for all women living below 250% of the federal poverty level and who are ages 50-74 or 40-49 with a family history of breast cancer.

Addressing Cancer Together follows the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

SCREENING RECOMMENDATIONS

 AGE 40 – 49

Is there a history of breast cancer in your family? Your risk for breast cancer is higher if you have a mother, sister, or daughter (first-degree relative), or multiple family members on either your mom’s or dad’s side of the family who have had breast cancer. Talk with your doctor about getting screened.

AGE 50 – 74

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening every two years.

American Cancer Society and other organizations have different screening guidelines. Please talk with your doctor about the best screening schedule for you.
